Guitar pickup wire has a certain natural resistivity, the longer the guitar pickup wire, the greater the resistance. The thickness of the wire also has a great influence on the resistance. The thinner the guitar pickup wire, the less current it passes, and the higher the resistance will be at a given length.

The most common guitar pickup wire gauge is 42 AWG, usually the reason for choosing a larger gauge wire is to get more turns for a larger output, but even with the same number of turns, the resistance will go up.
The increase in resistance also comes from more turns, but resistance is not the reason for the pickup's high output.

As an example, the guitar pickup wire is 7000 turns of 42 AWG when wound, which gives a DCR of about 5KΩ. The same winding method, but using a smaller gauge 43 AWG guitar pickup wire will result in about 6.3 KΩ; if a 44 AWG copper wire is used, the same 7000 turns of the same winding method will yield 7.5 KΩ. Both pickups can have the same number of turns and the same magnets. But by using wires of different gauges, the insulation can have a big effect on the sound of the pickup.

We prefer to let our products and service speak more than words.

Our Pickup Wire started with an Italian customer several years ago, after a year of R&D, and half-year blind and device test in Italy, Canada, Australia. Since lauched into markets, Ruiyuan Pickup Wire won a good reputation and has been chosen by over 50 pickups clients from Europe, America, Asia, etc.

We supply specialty wire to some of the world's most respected guitar pickup makers.

The insulation is basically a coating that is wrapped around the copper wire, so the wire doesn’t short itself out. Variations in insulation materials have a huge effect on a pickup’s sound.

We mainly manufacture Plain Enamel, Formvar insulation polysol insulation wire, for the simple reason that they just sound best to our ears.

The thickness of the wire is usually measured in AWG, which stands for American Wire Gauge. In guitar pickups, 42 AWG is the one that’s most commonly used. But wire-types measuring from 41 to 44 AWG are all being used in the construction of guitar pickups.
